UFC 77: The Preliminary Fights

JASON BLACK VS. MATT GRICE
Round One: Jason Black won a 10-9 round by locking in a Kimura.

Round Two: Black earned another 10-9 round by nearly ground and pounding Grice into a referee stoppage.

Round Three: Grice was able to earn this round 10-9.

Decision: Draw (29-28 Grice, 29-28 Black and 28-28)

The decision was reversed after the fight and Grice was announced as the winner (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

JOSH BURKMAN VS. FORREST PETZ
Round One: Burkman scored with two big takedowns as well as a near guillotine for a 10-9 round.

Round Two: Petz did well from the clinch to earn a 10-9 round.

Round Three: Burkman nearly got a guillotine again to win the round.

Decision: Josh Burkman (29-28 Burkman, 29-28 Burkman, 29-28 Petz)

DEMIAN MAIA VS. RYAN JENSEN
Round One: Maia got a quick tap-out via rear naked choke at 2:40.

Winner: Demian Maia via submission

YUSHIN OKAMI VS. JASON MACDONALD
Round One: MacDonald attempted an early takedown, but Okami defended well and landed some shots. 10-9 Okami.

Round Two: Yushin Okami worked from the top to earn another 10-9 round.

Round Three: Yushin Okami dominated another round. 10-9 Okami.

Decision: Yushin Okami via Unanimous Decision at 30-27

UFC 77: The Main Card Fights

KALIB STARNES VS. ALAN BELCHER
Round One: Belcher landed some early knees from a clinch. Belcher attempted a flying knee to little success. Belcher is pressin Starnes against the cage. Starnes got a quick takedown, but Belcher easily got up. Belcher hit another knee from the clinch. Belcher landed a leg kick, but Starnes landed a right hand in return. Starnes is starting to tee off on Belcher, who tried to land some knees again. Belcher rocked Starnes with a shot. Starnes is trying to fight back, but Belcher landed another knee. Starmes attempted a takedown, but Belcher landed another knee and a kick. Belcher landed two leg kicks. Belcher is controlling the pace and is too strong for Starnes.

Opinion: Easily 10-9 for Belcher. Belcher is getting anything he wants and Starnes is busted open badly from a cut.

Round Two: Starnes and Belcher are exchanging shots early. Starnes attempted a takedown, but Belcher blocked it and landed a knee from the clinch. Both men are sent to their corners so Starnes' cut can be checked.

Decision: Alan Belcher wins via referee stoppage due to the cut at 1:39. Kalib Starnes started cursing at his corner, clearly upset with them thinking he was done.

STEPHAN BONNAR VS. ERIC SCHAFER
Round One: Both men are swinging and missing. Schafer went for a takedown, but Bonnar is blocking well. Schafer is trying to hold onto Bonnar, but Bonnar is throwing some shots to the head of Schafer. Both men stood back up, but Schafer landed a big takedown on Bonnar. Schafer tried to get to Bonnar's back. Bonnar is on the ground and Schafer got the hooks in. Bonnar is holding his hands over his head to try and block the punches from Schafer. Schafer got one arm under on the rear naked choke. Bonnar is trying to roll out, causing Schafer to lose one of the leg hooks. Bonnar rolled again and briefly had the top to end the round.

Opinion: Bonnar defended well, but Schafer scored the big takedown and did some damage from the ground to earn a 10-9 round.

Round Two: Schafer went for an early takedown, but Bonnar ended up on top. Bonnar is landing some shots from his position. Bonnar is landing some shots and has Schafer flat on the ground. Schafer has his arm around the neck of Bonnar trying to hold him. Schafer started to cover up and Bonnar unloaded as the ref stepped in to end the fight.

Winner: Stephan Bonnar via Referee Stoppage

ALVIN ROBINSON VS. JORGE GURGEL
Round One: Gurgel quickly got on top of Robinson on the ground and threw some shots. Gurgel scrambled and was able to pass Robinson's guard. Gurgel worked from side control and transistioned to full mount. Gurgel avoided kicks to end the round.

Opinion: Gurgel completely dominated and should get a 10-8 round, but most judges will likely score it 10-9.

Round Two: Robinson got a takedown and had an exciting scramble with Gurgel for position. Robinson is trying to take Gurgel's back and is now trying to roll into a kimura. Gurgel was able to transistion to the top of Robinson from that position. Robinson landed some hammerfists from on top of Gurgel. Robinson is starting to land some hard shots to the jaw of Gurgel. Robinson pounded away to end the round.

Opinion: Robinson hurt Gurgel badly in this round and showed a complete metamorphosis from the first round. 10-9 round for Robinson.

Round Three: Robinson scored with another big takedown.
Robinson is pounding away at Gurgel, who just cannot get away from him or get back to his feet. Robinson got Gurgel's back to end the round.

Opinion: Another dominant round for Robinson. Robinson won this round 10-9, possibly even 10-8. Robinson should win this fight.

Decision: Alvin Robinson via Unanimous Decision (29-28 Once, 29-27 Twice)

Joe Rogan introduced Brock Lesnar to the crowd. Lesnar said that he has always loved this sport and said he was on the U.S.S. UFC.

TIM SYLVIA VS. BRANDON VERA
Round One: Vera went into an immediate clinch, but Sylvia just held him against the fence. Sylvia is throwing some knees into Vera's stomach. Sylvia and Vera are exchanging knees to the legs from the clinch. Sylvia and Vera exchanged punches, leading to Sylvia forcing Vera back into the cage. Sylvia held Vera against the cage to end the round.

Opinion: Not much action in the first round, but Sylvia did control the pace and land some knees to earn a 10-9 round.

Round Two: Vera landed a high kick, but Sylvia forced Vera back into the cage. Vera turned and tried to back Sylvia into the fence. The referee stepped in and separated the fighters. Sylvia is throwing some punches, but Vera is covering well. Sylvia forced Vera back into the cage. Vera was able to force Sylvia to the ground and get side control. Vera is not doing anything from the position. Brandon kneed Tim Sylvia as he was getting up and the referee warned him about hitting a downed opponent. Vera landed a body kick and went for another, but fell down to end the round.

Opinion: Neither fighter really suffered any damage, but Vera should win the round, 10-9, because of the takedown and the body kick.

Round Three: Sylvia tried to get an early clinch. Vera landed a shot, and Sylvia landed a few of his own. Sylvia continued to hold Vera against the fence. Sylvia is throwing some shots, and Vera landed a kick of his own. Sylvia is pressing Vera against the cage again. Vera landed a kick, but Sylvia responded with some shots. Vera's head is now busted open. Sylvia is pressing Vera against the cage. Sylvia is teeing off on Vera after a referee separation to end the round.

Opinion: Tim Sylvia should win this round and the fight, but it will be interesting to see how the judges view it.

Decision: Tim Sylvia via Unanimous Decision (29-28 Twice, 29-27 Once)

ANDERSON SILVA VS. RICH FRANKLIN
Round One: Both men are cautious. Franklin is defending the clinch very well. Franklin got Silva on the ground. Silva landed a kick to the body of Franklin. Silva is punching Franklin while holding him against the fence. Silva landed a knee from the clinch, but Franklin quickly escaped from the position. Silva landed a flying knee and a knee from the clinch and dropped Franklin with a punch to end the round.

Opinion: Easily the most exciting round of the night so far. Anderson Silva did far more damage, but the fight is still fairly close. 10-9 Silva.

Round Two: Silva dropped Franklin with a knee. Silva is throwing shots against Franklin on the cage and dropped him with a knee as the ref stepped in to end the fight.
