Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes Interim Welterweight Championship FIght
Round One: Hughes fakes a punch and goes for a takedown, but GSP completely avoids it. GSP throws a high-kick, but Hughes is ready with the block.
Leg kick from St. Pierre. Hughes is standing in Southpaw stance, likely because it makes it easier to get a takedown.
Hughes throws the occasional shot that doesn't land, but it's not like GSP is connecting either. It's Hughes throwing most of the shots.
GSP misses with a big high kick but then connects with a body kick. GSP charges in, and he and Hughes clinch. After some struggle, GSP manages to take legendary takedown artist Hughes to the mat.
Hughes starts throwing some elbows from the bottom, but GSP opens up once he gets a proper position. He's still in Hughes' guard, but he's easily moving Hughes towards the cage. Hughes rolls onto his side and grabs GSP's leg for leverage, but GSP shakes it off and gets right back on top in Hughes' guard.
GSP starts connecting with some right punches to the side of Hughes' face. He's still trapped in half-guard, but he's positioning himself well and has room to throw.
GSP uses an interesting body-to-body slam to shake Hughes' leg off and advance to mount. GSP gets warned for hitting Hughes in the back of the head. Hughes is desperately hanging onto GSP's body as the round comes to an end. With seconds left, Hughes gives up his back. GSP gets an arm for a possible submission, but the bell saves Hughes. Definitely a GSP round.
Round Two: Hughes is still in the southpaw stance. He dodges a high and low-kick from GSP. GSP locks Hughes' body and scores with another easy takedown. Mike Goldberg hit the nail on the head in saying that Hughes is becoming a victim of the strategy he used to beat so many UFC fighters in his career.
GSP is in a full guard, but he's active and quickly advances to half guard. Hughes pulls full guard again, but he doesn't appear close to getting out of this spot. Hughes connects with an elbow from the bottom, but GSP lands a series of right hands from the top. An elbow from GSP, followed by a left hand.
GSP tries for a can-opener, but Hughes refuses to open his guard. GSP is just too quick, however, and he eventually gets back to Hughes' half guard. He advances to mount and then slides in the hooks, but Hughes works his way out of the bad spot. He's not out of it yet, however, as GSP refuses to let Hughes up. He forces his opponent into the cage.
Hughes gets up and grabs GSP's legs for a takedown, but he doesn't come anywhere close. GSP answers with a beautiful trip into side control. Just like in the Josh Koscheck fight, GSP is winning at what should be his opponent's game.
GSP steps over Hughes' head for a possible inverted triangle and sets up a kimura. He almost gets it, but Hughes rolls out, allowing for an armbar. After some scrambling, GSP secures the armbar and forces Hughes to verbally tap out.
Georges St. Pierre won via submission (armbar) at 4:54 of Round Two to become the Interim UFC Welterweight Champion.
Georges St. Pierre thanks UFC for the belt but says he will not be fully satisfied until he beats the "real champion" Matt Serra.
