UFC 79: Nemesis The Preliminary Fights
Mark Bocek vs. Doug Evans Lightweight Fight
Round One: After some failed Bocek takedown attempts, Evans scores with a punch combination. Bocek scores an eventual takedown, but he can do nothing from side control. Likely an Evans round.
Round Two: Bocek gets in the zone after a few more takedown failures, putting Evans on the ground with a double-leg. Evans gets up, but Bocek answers with a slam. He pounds Evans with elbows from half-guard, with Evans unable to get new offense on the board as the round ends, presumably in Bocek's favor.
Round Three: Bocek takes Evans down early in the round, but a period of inactivity leads to a referee stand-up. Bocek responds with yet another takedown, continuing his dominance of Evans. Evans tries to score submissions from the bottom, but to no avail, as Bocek cruises to what should be a victory. It is.
Mark Bocek won via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Roan Carneiro vs. Tony DeSouza Welterweight Fight
Round One: Carneiro answers with an early takedown, but DeSouza works hard on submissions from the bottom. DeSouza's effort on the submissions allows Carneiro to pass; DeSouza gives up his back in the process. Carneiro tries for a rear naked choke, but DeSouza reverses and gets on top. The two jockey for position (though DeSouza generally wins out from this point forward), with little doing much offensive damage, for the remainder of the round. Likely a Carneiro round.
Round Two: A period of inactivity against the cage leads to a restarting of the action in the center. Carneiro answers with a takedown and attaches himself to DeSouza's back as DeSouza tries to get to his feet. Carneiro pulls DeSouza down and goes to work with ground and pound that yields a TKO victory.
Roan Carneiro won via TKO (strikes) at 3:30 of Round Two.
Dean Lister vs. Jordan Radev Middleweight Fight
Round One: Lister connects with the occasional kick, but it's clear that he wants this fight on the ground. The jiu-jitsu specialist looks for takedowns or the opportunity to pull Radev into his guard, but Radev doesn't let it happen. Lister round, though.
Round Two: Much of round two follows the format of round one, with Lister looking to get Radev in his guard but Radev not letting it happen. Strikes are traded occasionally in this period. With less than a minute left, Lister finally connects with a takedown and goes to work with ground and pound to finish the round. Another one for Lister.
Round Three: Excitement does not suddenly emerge in round three. Lister kept trying for another takedown, but Radev kept escaping (even running away at one point). Radev connects with a punch, while Lister locks the body and unsuccessfully tries for a takedown. He finally gets one midway through the round and does very little; Radev does very little from the bottom.
Dean Lister won via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Nate Mohr vs. Manny Gamburyan Lightweight Fight
Round One: Manny goes for a hasty takedown attempt, but Mohr does a solid job of blocking it. After delivering a leg kick, Gamburyan shoots for another takedown. After a bit of struggle, Gamburyan lifts Mohr up and slams him to the mat. He works from Mohr's guard.
After using strikes to create distance, Manny drops down to secure an ankle lock. Mohr taps and then holds his knee, indicating that Manny's submission caused an injury.
Manny Gamburyan won via submission (ankle lock) at 1:31 of Round One.
James Irvin vs. Luiz Cane Light Heavyweight Fight
Round One: The final preliminary fight opens with successful strikes from Cane that stun Irvin. Irvin bounces back, however, and answers with his own left hook. Cane ends up getting Irvin on the ground, and delivers a knee to his head while he was still grounded. Irvin wins due to a disqualification stemming from the illegal blow.
James Irvin won via disqualification (illegal knee) at 1:51 of Round One.
UFC 79: Nemesis The Main Card Fights
Melvin Guillard vs. Rich Clementi Lightweight Fight
Round One: No glove-touching as the action begins. Guillard makes the first motion with a missed right hand. Clementi connects with a leg kick.
The two continue circling, neither is really landing anything as the first minute passes. Guillard moves in and connects with a right hand; Clementi fires back with a high kick, and then Guillard misses with a wild right hand. They're back to circling in the center of the Octagon.

Guillard connects with a big shot, but Clementi grabs Guillard in a bodylock. He slams Guillard to the mat. Guillard tries to work his way out, but Clementi hangs on and takes Guillard's back. He sets up a full nelson on Guillard, but Guillard shakes it off and gets back to his feet. Clementi answers with another takedown, but Guillard reverses it and lands on top. He gets back to his feet and we're back to circling inside the ring.
Guillard nails Clementi with a right hand but then slips on a follow through. He and Clementi clinch up and the fight goes to the ground with Guillard on top.
Clementi reverses things with a submission attempt and gets back on top. He tries to revert to Guillard's back; he gets a body triangle in and tries for a rear naked choke on the flattened Guillard. Guillard taps out to the choke.
After the referee breaks up the fight, Clementi offers a "suck it" gesture. That angers Guillard, who needs to be restrained from attacking the victor.
Rich Clementi won via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:40 of Round One.
Following the fight, Clementi taunts Guillard and gets him to make another attempt to charge. Numerous individuals escort Guillard from the ring, where Clementi cuts a promo that rips on Guillard for not being able to back up his shit-talking.
Sokoudjou vs. Lyoto Machida Light Heavyweight Fight
Round One: Here we go! Machida makes the first move with a left hand; Sokoudjou fires back with a kick and then a big right hand. He clinches up with Machida and takes him down, but Machida sweeps and gets on top. He's in Sokoudjou's half guard.
Machida's doing very little, but Sokoudjou appears only capable of powering Machida off (which isn't working), rather than using technique to get out of the bad spot. Machida remains on top and starts going for a kimura as the fight's second minute passes.
He lets go of the kimura and delivers a punch and elbow. He throws a little bit more, but he's not doing too much to advance his position. Nonetheless, Sokoudjou isn't doing much to get out of the spot.
Sokoudjou tries for a guillotine, but it lasts for about five seconds before Lyoto gets out. The referee finally stands things up.
Machida tries for a straight left, but he misses. Bodykick from Machida. Leg kick from Machida. Sokoudjou pushes Machida into the cage and gets a takedown. Machida pops right back up and delivers a knee to Sokoudjou's stomach. They clinch up as the round ends. No sign of the Sokoudjou who dominated Nogueira and Arona in PRIDE, and it's definitely a Machida round.
Round Two: Big high kick from Machida; Sokoudjou gets his hand in the way, but it definitely caused some impact. Leg kick from Machida. Sokoudjou charges forward with a big kick that misses. He then throws a right hand.
Sokoudjou charges in with another right hand, but it doesn't really connect. Weak leg kick from Sokoudjou, followed by a missed high kick. Kick to Sokoudjou's face.
Another high kick from Machida.
Sokoudjou charges in, and gets caught with a big counter strike from Machida. Machida brings the action to the ground with pounding, but he cannot finish Sokoudjou. He's still doing great damage in half guard.
Machida sets up an arm triangle on Sokoudjou, Sokoudjou shakes out, but he's still on his back getting shots. Machida moves to mount and sets up another arm triangle. Sokoudjou pops out, but he cannot reverse position and is still pinned on his back. A big elbow from Machida, who's in half guard.
Machida locks in the arm triangle and pops to the side, securing it very deeply. Sokoudjou is put to sleep.
Lyoto Machida won via submission (arm triangle choke) at 4:20 of Round Two.
Eddie Sanchez vs. Soa Palelei Heavyweight Fight
Round One: Sanchez moves forward with early strikes, but Palelei clinches up and presses the smaller opponent against the cage.
Sanchez is throwing some shots from teh clinched position, but he's unable to break free. Palelei knees Sanchez and finally trips Sanchez to the mat. Sanchez remains on his knee, however and continues to throw shots to Palelei's head.
Palelei switches position to finish the takedown, but Sanchez is remaining active to avoid getting caught in a dominant Palelei spot. Palelei lets go of Sanchez's leg, allowing Sanchez to get up. He threw a few shots of his own in the process.
During an exchange against the cage, Sanchez hits Palelei in the midsection. The referee pauses for what appeared to be a groin shot.
Sanchez moves right towards Palelei after the break, but Palelei clinches back up. It's the same boring story from earlier in the fight, but Sanchez is more active this time and is keeping the dominant position in the clinch. He throws a series of soft blows to Palelei's head, but the bigger Palelei eventually reverses the clinch and forces Sanchez into the cage. The referee breaks the clinch due to the inactivity.
They clinch right back up, but Palelei creates distance with two knees. Sanchez fires back with some punches. Palelei goes for a wild return punch and misses, slipping in the process. Sanchez doesn't truly take advantage, although he does connect a few times. Palelei misses again, this time with a wild left hand.

Referee breaks the clinch. Palelei throws two wild right hands and works Sanchez back into the cage.
Sanchez answers with a takedown of his own. His control on the ground doesn't last long, and they trade a few jabs before going back to the clinch position. Boos from the crowd, as this is an absolutely boring fight so far. Sanchez appears tired, but he delivers a big uppercut during a brief period of separation from the clinch.
Separation with twenty three seconds left. Another uppercut from Sanchez, who's now firing away with a flurry. Palelei counters with a knee, but Sanchez is the one pushing forward. He ends the round with a knee to the nose of Palelei's slightly bloody face. Another Sanchez round but from an exciting one.
Round Three: Sanchez moves forward right out of the gate, throwing a few punches and then clinching Palelei against the cage. Palelei reverses for a second, but it's clear that Sanchez is in control. Palelei opens up for some knees, but Sanchez fires back with a more effective punch combination.
Sanchez is now picking Palelei apart with his hands. He lands two more uppercuts, and Palelei just has nothing with which to respond. They clinch back against the cage, and the boredom resumes. They each throw the occasional knee or shot, but nothing is getting done. Sanchez throws a right hand during a separation period, but Palelei clinches back up to avoid damage.
Sanchez connects with three more uppercuts to Palelei's fight, and the referee steps in to end it. It was a weird situation for a referee stoppage, but it's clear that Palelei is done.
Sanchez started taunting Palelei after the fight; it concerned Palelei saying in the pre-fight that Sanchez had a "nice smile" (implying that he didn't offer much else).
Eddie Sanchez won via TKO (strikes) at 3:24 of Round Three.

Right hand from Liddell. Liddell delivers a right hand to Silva's jaw, but he misses on a subsequent haymaker attempt. The two trade blows yet again.
Leg kick from Liddell. The round ends, likely in Liddell's favor, but it's hard to say someone's "winning" at this point.
Round Two: Silva lets loose at the onset of the round, but Liddell dodges much of the attack. Straight right hand from Liddell; he then circles away.
Liddell misses on a left hook as they continue circling; it appears Silva is now controlling the movement in the Octagon. Silva counters a Liddell miss with a combination.

Big jab by Liddell, but Silva responds with a left hook. Chuck's back to stalking. He catches Silva with a left hand and then pushes forward with a clinch. Silva is busted open as Chuck goes crazy with punches from the corner. He hits an elbow, but Silva fires back with some of his signature looping punches. They're trading viciously in the corner, and finally bring the action back to the middle.
Silva connects with a right hand on a counter shot. He opens up with a flurry on Chuck, but Chuck weathers it and goes right to work on Silva. He cracks Silva with a series of punches, one of which causes Silva to buckle, but he can't finish. Silva responds with some punches, and Liddell drops down to take Silva to the mat. That's where the round ends. A fantastic final minute to end a round that should once again fall in Liddell's favor.

Chuck Liddell won via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).

Round One: Hughes fakes a punch and goes for a takedown, but GSP completely avoids it. GSP throws a high-kick, but Hughes is ready with the block.
Leg kick from St. Pierre. Hughes is standing in Southpaw stance, likely because it makes it easier to get a takedown.

GSP misses with a big high kick but then connects with a body kick. GSP charges in, and he and Hughes clinch. After some struggle, GSP manages to take legendary takedown artist Hughes to the mat.
Hughes starts throwing some elbows from the bottom, but GSP opens up once he gets a proper position. He's still in Hughes' guard, but he's easily moving Hughes towards the cage.
