UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 The Preliminary Fights
Jonathan Goulet vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka Welterweight Fight
Round One: After some clinching, Goulet manages to toss Hironaka to the mat. Hironaka keeps control of Goulet's body and works his way back to his feet and does some damage with a left hand in the process.
Round Two: Goulet scores with a punch during a trading of strikes and begins taking it to Hironaka. Goulet continues his assault and overwhelms Hironaka as the fight is stopped.
Jonathan Goulet won via TKO (strikes) at 2:07 of Round Two.
Brad Morris vs. Cain Velasquez Heavyweight Fight
Round One: Velasquez gets an early advantage in the striking battle and forces the action to the mat, where he continues his assault. Morris works back to his feet, but he's dropped again and Velasquez pursues with strikes en route to a stoppage.
Cain Velasquez won via TKO (strikes) at 2:10 of Round One.
Sam Stout vs. Rich Clementi Lightweight Fight
Round One: Clementi scores a takedown from clinch. Clementi works his way to a mount and then Stout's back, but Stout gets out of the bad spot and brings things back to half guard. Clementi throws some punches from this position, but Stout eventually fires up to his feet. He is not there for long; Clementi brings things back to the ground and closes the round in control.
Round Two: Stout and Clementi trade on their feet, with the occasional scramble for position erupting. Stout works for a takdown but gets caught in a guillotine. He breaks out and delivers some offense as the round ends.
Round Three: Clementi pushes through a strike exchange and takes Stout to the mat. Stout works to his feet and delivers some big blows to Clementi, which forces the TUF4 alum to try for a takedown. He does not get it, and Stout delivers some shots as the round ends.
Rich Clementi won via split decision (29-27, 29-28, 28-29).
Ed Herman vs. Demian Maia Middleweight Fight
Round One: Maia quickly takes Herman down, but Herman manages to escape. After some clinching, Herman ends up on top of his opponent. Maia is active from the bottom and almost secures some submission moves, which creates a scramble and allows him to get back on top. Maia reverses and delivers damage, but Herman turns things back around late in the round and delivers blows of his own.
Round Two: Herman reverses a Maia takedown and gets on top. Herman delivers blows from the top but ends up trapped in a triangle choke. He is choked out and the referee steps in.
Demian Maia won via submission (triangle choke) at 2:27 of Round Two.
Alan Belcher vs. Jason Day Middleweight Fight
Round One: Belcher scores an early takedown and advances to side control, but Day brings him back to full guard. Belcher is very ineffective in this position. When the action returns to the feet, Day begins unloading on Belcher and continues the onslaught until a stoppage is ordered.
Jason Day won via TKO (strikes) at 3:58 of Round One.
Joe Doerksen vs. Jason MacDonald Middleweight Fight
Round One: From clinch, Jason MacDonald locks in a guillotine. He tries to get the submission, but Doerksen eventually works his way out and ends up on top of MacDonald in half-guard. Doerksen works for a kimura; when that fails, he does damage from the top as the round ends, likely in his favor.
Round Two: MacDonald wins early stand-up and then takes Doerksen to the mat. He scores from the top and the referee is forced to step in.
Jason MacDonald won via TKO (strikes) at :54 of Round Two.
UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 Main Card Fights
Mac Danzig vs. Mark Bocek Lightweight Fight
Round One: And, we're off! They circle each other looking for opportunities. Danzig tries for a high kick, while Bocek tries to find some jab openings.
Danzig moves forward, but Bocek fires hard from counter and connects. Back to the center of ring, and Bocek looks for a takedown. He pushes Danzig into the corner of the cage, but Danzig works hard to block the takedown. Danzig actually flips over Bocek's head, but Bocek follows through and eventually scores the takedown.
From Danzig's guard, Bocek throws some big punches. Danzig keeps trying for a triangle and then settles for an omaplata, but Bocek works out of it and hits some huge shots from the top. Bocek pushes Danzig against the cage, which allows Danzig to sit up. Danzig works hard and gets back to his feet, but Bocek clings to his back.
Bocek takes Danzig down from behind, but Danzig slips out underneath. Bocek is now working from on top in Danzig's half guard.
Danzig tries for a higher guard; Bocek slips out and creates some distance to throw some bombs. During the exchange, however, Danzig works back to his feet. From clinch, Danzig reverses and ends up on top. He fires some shots as he ends up in half guard, but Bocek gains some control of the situation and sets up guard. The round ends.
Round Two: Danzig connects with a knee that drops Bocek. He pounces on top with strikes, but he cannot get the quick finish. He eventually moves to the side of a turtled Bocek and continues throwing, but Bocek manages to stand up. Danzig keeps going to work, however, and gets Bocek back down on a failed takedown attempt.
He works quickly and almost gets a mount to deliver some blows, but Bocek works out of it. Danzig goes right back to work and moves to side control, and then stays on Bocek's back. Bocek keeps spinning around, but Danzig is not relenting and keeps on top of his opponent. Danzig gets both hooks in from on Bocek's back. Bocek tries to shake him off, but Danzig keeps going at it.
Danzig eventually gives up on the ground and stands things back up. Bocek throws a weak high kick, really reflecting his fatigue. Bocek moves forward with some punches, but he doesn't get much done and Danzig brings things back to the mat. He's throwing shots, but nothing really significant at this point and Bocek is going to survive the round.
Round Three: Danzig catches Bocek with a right hand. Bocek shows that it hurt, but then moves forward with some blows and then drops for a takedown. Danzig again tries to flip out of the takedown, but Bocek persists and gets it. He throws some shots at Danzig as Danzig is against the cage, but Danzig works his way back to his feet.
Back on their feet, Danzig connects with a knee. He appears far more composed on his feet and is just picking Bocek apart with jabs and kicks. Big right hand that pushes Bocek back, and the doctor halts the action to check on Bocek's cut.
The action quickly resumes, and Danzig keeps connecting with punches. He has totally got Bocek outtimed. Danzig moves forward with some big punches, and then trips Bocek to the mat. Danzig ends up taking Bocek's back and secures a rear naked choke. He gets the submission victory.
Mac Danzig won via submission at 3:48 of Round Three.
Michael Bisping vs. Charles McCarthy Middleweight Fight
Round One: McCarthy tries with a wild shot early on, but Bisping dodges it and throws a combination in McCarthy's direction.
Bisping throws some shots and then clinches up to throw some knees. They don't really land, though, and McCarthy taunts Bisping. Bisping keeps throwing shots but is unable to really connect.
Another knee attempt from Bisping, and another taunt from a confident McCarthy. Bisping throws an uppercut but then misses with a big right hand. Bisping hits with a left hand. Bisping sets up a clinch for another knee, but McCarthy grabs Bisping's legs and delivers a huge slamming takedown.
McCarthy works from Bisping's half guard. He's not really going for damage and is instead looking to advance his position. He soon works for an armbar in a scramble. Bisping breaks out and gets back to his feet.
Bisping goes back to the that clinch position and keeps throwing knees and punches. McCarthy blocks many of them with his arms, but Bisping is unbelievably relentless (almost as if he is hitting a back) and drops McCarthy late in the round.
McCarthy seemingly survives as the bell sounds, but McCarthy cannot get up and the fight is called. He appears to be holding his arm, which could be a casualty of the numerous knees he blocked with his forearms.
Michael Bisping won via TKO (doctor's stoppage) after Round One.
Kalib Starnes vs. Nate Quarry Middleweight Fight
Round One: Here we go in this battle of TUF alumni.
After some feeling out, Quarry moves forward with blows. None really land, but Starnes definitely attempts to escape. They clinch up and then separate, and the action is back in the middle of the ring.
Quarry fires a right hand and almost slips. Starnes flicks a jab kick that doesn't come within five feet of Quarry. The circling continues as the crowd seems to get a bit restless. Quarry throws a body shot.
Starnes throws a leg kick, but Quarry counters with one of his own and then throws some shots. He again sends Quarry speeding backwards for cover. Starnes survives without suffering too many blows. Still, he is losing as the round ends.
Round Two: Starnes opens up with a blow, but Quarry comes right back at him with a right leg kick. Another leg kick from Quarry, and Starnes is just not answering. Starnes mis-times a punch and actually catches one of his own.
Kalib keeps backing up as Quarry connects with some shots to the jaw. Kalib delivers some leg kicks and looks for a potential takedown, but he doesn't get it. He finally catches Quarry's leg and scores a trip takedown, but he doesn't pounce and Quarry pops right back up.
Starnes again tries to counter on a Quarry leg kick, but it doesn't happen. More circling and strikes from Quarry as the round ends. The crowd is chanting, "boring."
Round Three: The feeling out from Starnes continues. Quarry keeps moving forward with leg kicks and jabs, but he's still not doing anything that's going to end the fight.
The fight just has nothing going for it. Starnes is very infrequently engaging, and Quarry, for all his engagement, is still playing somewhat cautiously.
Quarry catches Starnes with a jab and then moves forward with a leg kick, but he doesn't do enough to drop Starnes. He spins Starnes around with a leg kick. Starnes keeps running away, and Quarry mocks him (Starnes responds with a middle finger).
Quarry continues mocking Starnes as the round ends.
Nate Quarry won via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-24).
The crowd cheers Quarry huge but boos Starnes with even more intensity.
Rich Franklin vs. Travis Lutter Middleweight Fight
Round One: The co-main-event is underway.
Lutter goes right for a clinch, but Franklin shakes him off. He tries again, and Franklin connects with a punch that seems to affect Lutter. Lutter moves forward for a single leg takedown, but Franklin works hard to keep on his feet.
Lutter works hard in this clinched up position, however, and then grabs Franklin's back. He uses his leverage to drop Franklin to the mat and then treis to lock his hooks into Franklin's body. He struggles greatly, so he switches his strategy and begins to operate from on top in Franklin's half guard.
Franklin keeps his guard centered as Lutter tries for a mount pass. He advances to side control for a second, but Franklin pulls his hips back and brings things back to full guard.
Lutter passes this, however, and moves to full mount. He starts throwing some shots, but Franklin starts to move himself out. Lutter changes his mind and grabs an arm for an armbar. It was completely in, but Franklin somehow spins out of it and ends up on top. He moves back to his feet.
Lutter goes for a takedown, but Franklin sprawls to defend. Lutter won't let go of the leg, and Franklin tries hard to throw shots as a counter method. Lutter still has a piece of Franklin as the round ends.
Round Two: Lutter once again tries to open with a clinch, but he's no Anderson Silva. Franklin fights him off, and Lutter drops to his back and invites Franklin into his guard.
Lutter tries for a takedown, but Franklin makes him pay with a knee. Lutter stumbles a bit, and Franklin connects with a big kick to the face. He brings Lutter to the mat and tries to finish, but Lutter grabs an ankle for an attempted submission. Franklin escapes and they're standing.
Franklin delivers more knees as Lutter goes for a takedown. Lutter is completely rocked, but Franklin does not finish.
Lutter hangs onto Franklin's leg and is pretty much just crouching on the mat waiting to be knocked out, but Franklin is still somewhat hesistant.
They're back standing, and Lutter is just wobbling and eating punches. Franklin drops Lutter and pounces some more, and the referee is forced to step in.
Rich Franklin won via TKO (strikes) at 3:01 of Round Two.
Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra Welterweight Championship
Round One: And, we're off!
Georges St. Pierre scores an immediate takedown and lands in Serra's half-guard. St. Pierre throws some soft inside shots as he looks to advance his position. Serra brings things back to full guard, but St. Pierre steps right through and gets back to half guard. He then stands up to give himself distance and delivers a big blow to the face.
Serra eats the blow but brings St. Pierre back to his full guard. Serra tries to raise his guard, perhaps for a triangle, but St. Pierre creates distance and delivers more big blows to the face. Serra brings things close again and throws an elbow to the top of St. Pierre's head, but St. Pierre is getting the better of the situation.
St. Pierre moves to side control. Serra rolls over and tries to stand up, but St. Pierre puts him right back on the mat. Serra tries the same thing, but St. Pierre just will not let go. Serra eventually works his way to his feet, and moves forward with a left hand.
St. Pierre connects with a right handed Superman punch. Serra lunges with a punch that misses, and Serra brings him right to the mat. Serra passes to side control as the round ends.
Round Two: Serra goes for a leg kick, but St. Pierre pushes right through it and takes Serra down again. St. Pierre goes through some offense, but Serra eventually works his way to his feet.
Serra then finally blocks a takedown and goes for a Superman punch, but St. Pierre moves out of the way. Serra connects with a kick, but St. Pierre answers right back. They start trading a bit, and Serra suddenly stops keeping his hands up and and eats a few jabs. Serra appears to be waiting for a chance for a counter, but he doesn't get it, and St. Pierre takes Serra down with ease.
St. Pierre punches his way into position and gets on top of Serra. He works from Serra's full guard. Serra rolls over, but St. Pierre refuses to relent. St. Pierre starts delivering Heath Herring/Cheick Kongo knees to the body, and Serra is forced to spin and bring it back to guard. St. Pierre quickly passes back to the same side position that allows for the brutal knees.
St. Pierre stands up and starts using the entirety of his momentum to knee Serra's side. The referee steps in to stop the fight. Some of the Canadian crowd boos, which indicates some disagreement over how the fight was stopped.
Serra holds St. Pierre on his shoulders to show congratulations, however, so it appears that Serra was fine with the referee's decision. The knees did appear brutal and Serra wasn't defending himself.
Georges St. Pierre won via TKO (knees) at 4:45 of Round Two to become the UFC Welterweight Champion
